Rules

RULES:
1. Any entries not meeting the specifications listed below WILL NOT BE HUNG OR
JUDGED. Any entry that falls off the wall due to being improperly equipped will NOT be
rehung or judged.
2. All artwork exhibited in this division must be original and the work of the exhibitor. (No
copies, no tracing, and no pre-sketched kits.)
3. All two-dimensional work must be equipped with a pair of metal or reinforced paper eyes
threaded with wire for hanging. The hanging apparatus should not show above or from the front
of the artwork.
4. Any two-dimensional artwork executed on paper such as Watercolors (Class 3) and Prints and
Drawings (Class 4) must be matted with a staff mat. Artwork may be framed but it is not
required. Children’s art will be stapled to the wall and need not be matted. Children’s art must
NOT be framed or contain hard plastic, wood, or glass!
5. Photography (Classes 10,11,12) IS NOT to be framed, but must be matted or dry-mounted. It
need not be equipped to hang as stated in Rule 3 above. Photographs must be composed and
photographed by the exhibitor but may be professionally developed if so desired. See
Division M-1 for photography rules.
6. Entry tags should be attached to the upper right corner of the back side of two-dimensional
exhibits.
7. No article is allowed on exhibition that has won a premium in this division.
8. Exhibitors are allowed two entries in each list number in Classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 12. Only
one entry per list number allowed in classes 7, 8, 9, & 10.
9. Professional artists are not eligible to enter this division. Professionals are defined as persons
earning their livelihood from their artistic skill.
10.If there are 10 or more entries in any list category, that category will be divided.

Please be aware of copyright laws when entering items for public display.
Copyright is a protection to the creator/owner of published and unpublished works.
Copyright laws grant the creator the exclusive right to reproduce, perform, distribute and
display the work publicly.
The copyright law states that an individual can use another’s work (art,
photograph, written word, logo, trademark, team insignia, etc.) for your own personal use.
This use means you will not make money from the item, and the item will not be on public
display.
Written permission must be obtained for the use of the copyrighted work. This
includes cartoon characters, such as: any Disney character, Looney Tunes, Precious
Moments, etc.
Muscatine County Extension Service has a nice one-page handout that is used for 4-
H competition, which would be helpful for open class decisions.
When submitting work for competition which will be on public display, please follow
copyright laws.
